In The Glow: Harlequin

$4,000.00
Sold

Harlequin, industrial felt and mixed media, 36 x 24 x 2.5 inches, 2024

Naming artworks brings in another dimension of ideas and associations. This stitched wall sculpture began as an investigation into reflected light in small cavities accumulated into a larger pleasing design. When I stood back to look at the final piece I realized that, once again, the combination of form, material, and pink color would undoubtedly read as yonic for some of my audience. This is not at all the first time I have begun with 'pure' form and ended up with strongly feminine symbolism.

The title of this piece, 'Harlequin', refers both to the diamond pattern common to that comic servant character, but also to the nature of a harlequin as a mischievous trickster, acting to undermine or thwart the aims of their commander. My exploration of geometric forms repeatedly translates into organic and body-like imagery, regardless of my aim.

In this one-of-a-kind wall-hanging sculpture, stitched and pigmented industrial felt showcases the everyday magic of reflected light and color. The variety of pink tones in this piece result from intense pigment, but also reflected light bouncing off that pigment.

This piece is featured in my solo exhibit ‘In The Glow’ at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, California from September - December 2024. This work is available to purchase, but must remain on view at the Triton Museum through the close of the exhibition. Shipping, pickup, or delivery can be arranged with the artist.
