Flesh & Bone Study #8 (Twisting Fin) Wool Sculpture
Flesh & Bone Study #8 (Twisting Fin) Wool Sculpture
Flesh & Bone Study #8 (Twisting Fin), wool and wood, 10.5 x 6.25 x 3.5 inches, 2014.
This translucent one-of-a-kind sculpture is from the ‘Flesh & Bone’ body of work, a series of small studies and human-sized sculptures that combine and reference parts of the body, from soft weighty folds of flesh to the stripped down abstract architecture of bones. The features of each extreme—rigid, angular edges and plump creases and dimples—blend into each other in a sort of logic that develops as I construct the piece and imagine the forces acting upon it.
I created this sculpture by compressing, tangling, and shaping loose fibers into felt using hand-held felting needles. This piece is robust, yet it is best displayed under a glass dome (8 x 12” dome provided, if desired) or in a case to prevent dust.
