Damask Crow Wool Drawing

$950.00

Wool Through Paper, 30” X 22”, 2007

This is one of my earliest wool drawings, inspired by my childhood observation of textured and highly patterned wallpaper in which I’d imagine I could see hidden yet recognizable animals.

There's something about seeing a drawing from afar, assuming it's made of ink or perhaps charcoal, and then getting up close and seeing that it's HAIR. This drawing hides a bird in a damask-like pattern rendered in black wool through deep cream-colored paper. This piece measures 30" x 22"; it is unframed; framing should ideally be in a shadowbox or add another layer of matting to let the hairs have space.

I created this one-of-a-kind wool drawing by pushing wool through paper using a felting needle; half of the wool protrudes through the back side of the thick paper. This is an Open Edition, meaning I may revisit this design again-- but each wool rendition would be unique. Please display this work under UV glass or out of direct sunlight; like watercolor paintings, the color of the wool may change color over time in direct sun.

Yes, as far as I know I invented this technique, such as it is. At least I never saw or knew of anyone else using felting needles to 'draw' with wool by pushing it through paper; I started doing this in 2007.

This is an oversized item; shipping reflects best estimate but may be adjusted or partially reimbursed upon shipping.
