Lorica #2 (Antique Cream) Wool Sculpture

$3,500.00

Lorica #2, Wool and metal mesh, 9 x 8 x 10 inches, 2011

This one-of-a-kind sculpture is from the Lorica series, which feature skins of metal mesh on amorphous forms that seem to writhe and then pause, mid-movement. The aluminum ‘scales’ that follow folds of flesh before sinking into wooly hair are repurposed from lamé evening bags. The ostentatious decorative effect nearly overwhelms the implied function of the protective chain mail: to divert attention and protect the soft underbelly. Beauty is used as distraction and armor to mask vulnerability.

I created this sculpture by compressing, tangling, and shaping loose fibers into felt using hand-held felting needles. This piece is robust, yet it would be best displayed under a glass dome or in a case to prevent dust.
