In The Glow: Cleave

$4,000.00

In The Glow: Cleave, wool, 9 x 8 x 6 inches, 2023 (glass dome, 10 x 10 x 10, included)

This one-of-a-kind sculpture is from my newest body of work, ‘In The Glow,’ in which sculptures embody a multitude of incarnations of what it means to be a contemporary woman: strong, complex, bold, fragile lovely, grotesque, painful, elegant, overwhelming, vulnerable, powerful, and visceral. An inner core of intense pink pigment represents an inner ‘life force.’

From a materials and perception standpoint, this direction in my sculptural practice grows out of my ongoing love of suggestive organic forms as a means to capture the sensations that don’t directly translate into words. These sculptures, in particular, are channeling my experiences of girlhood and womanhood from the perspective of someone moving through the world and contemporary culture in a female-identified body, as subject versus object. They also incorporate recent experiments with reflected color: the effect of bounced light to call attention to the very act of seeing.

On top of that, pink is a loaded color— associated with different meanings and values depending on context, gender, culture, object, and age. Does every body, regardless of skin color, have some pink organs thanks to red blood cells? Is pink actually a universally human color?

I created this sculpture by compressing, tangling, and shaping loose fibers into felt using hand-held felting needles. This piece is robust, yet it is best displayed under a glass dome or in a case to prevent dust; a 10 x 10 x 10 glass dome, not pictured, is included.

featured in my solo exhibit ‘In The Glow’ at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, California from September - December 2024. I will arrange with its collector for a museum loan.
